Leadership Shorts – Open, Honest, and at times Vulnerable

In order for a leader’s people to want to follow them the leader must be willing to let their guard down and let them know who they really are.

When given a choice most people will only willingly follow or be influenced by someone they trust.  Trust is not something that comes easy though.  For someone to trust you they have to feel like they know you and what you stand for.  They must believe in you.

One of the best ways for others to get to know you is by being open, honest, and at times vulnerable in your communications with them.

The average person is not always open or willing to share their thoughts, ideas, or what they value with just anybody.  That is because there will always be a certain percentage of people that won’t agree with you.  By sharing too much it could possibly open you up to a certain amount of criticism.

The best leaders understand this and are willing to take the risk of criticism.  Because they know the value and importance of trust and the impact it has on their effectiveness to lead others.

A leader needs to communicate openly, honestly, and at times be vulnerable.

Faith

Faith

During times of significant struggle one of the things people need from their leaders is the hope that things will get better.

The hope and belief of a better future can help us to keep moving forward when having to deal with a lot of difficult situations.

We all get lost sometimes. As long as we keep moving forward we will find our way back.

When faced with a problem the best thing to do is focus on coming up with a solution and staying optimistic.

Sometimes to do what we hope to we can’t listen to what others say or let them set our expectations for what’s possible or not.

Some paths are meant to be traveled with others and some by ourselves. However as long as we believe we are never truly alone.

As long as our faith is strong and we believe then we are never truly alone and have all the support we need to overcome any challenge.

Our success or failure of a task is often determined before we have begun to complete it. By our own thoughts and beliefs.

Being able to accomplish a worthy task or not is usually determined by whether we believe we can or not.

That little voice in our head that tells us we can or can’t do something is only right when we choose to believe what it is telling us.

If you can imagine accomplishing something and believe in yourself then you can.

Everyone wants to believe in and feel like they are a part of something much bigger than just themselves.

When we truly believe in what we are working towards we will do everything we can to make it successful.

Preparation, confidence, execution, and faith all add up to results we can be proud of regardless of what we are working towards.

Everyone is special in their own unique way. Be proud of who you are and never be afraid to stand out because of your differences.

We must always do what we believe is right and have faith that everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.

The dawning of a new day has the potential to wash away the worries of yesterday and replace them with the hope of a better today.

Dream

Dream

A dreamer must take action if they want what they imagine to become a reality.

We all have the potential and ability to create the life we dream of having. We just have to be willing to do what it takes to get it.

In order to have bigger accomplishments we have to learn to dream bigger dreams.

Day dreaming is getting a glimpse of our future possibilities. They will only come true if we are willing to take action though.

To be the person we dream of becoming sometimes we have to first be willing to stop being the person we used to be.

It seems like the closer we get to achieving our goals and dreams the more we are tested to determine if they are what we really want to do.

Every so often we get distracted from following our dreams. When that happens we must refocus and get back to working towards reaching them.

No one knows what our dreams are more than we do and ultimately it is up to us to make sure we are doing what we can to pursue them.

If you want your dreams to become a reality you have to be willing to share them with others.

When you share your dreams with others you are inviting them to help you achieve them. The bigger the dreams the more help you need.

Our age is just a number and shouldn’t keep us from living our lives or following our dreams.

It’s never too late to achieve our dreams. If we believe in ourselves, stay determined, and never give up we can accomplish anything.

Decisions, Actions, and Behaviors

Decisions, Actions, and Behaviors

Our thoughts influence the decisions we make, actions we take, and behaviors we display.

We create the foundation for our future with the decisions we make and actions we take each and every day of our lives.

The people we are and the lives we live are determined by the decisions we make at key times throughout our lives.

There are times in our lives we are faced with making very difficult decisions.

The greater the difficulty, the greater the potential impact our decisions can have on us and those closest to us.

We must do our best to make decisions that we can be proud of regardless of who knows about them and ones that align with our character.

The most important decisions we have in life are often the hardest ones to make.

Emotion can be a strength or weakness. You have to know when it’s needed and when to remove it in order to make the right decision for you.

When we consider the possible repercussions of our decisions before making them we increase our chances of making the best ones possible.

If you’re self-aware and do your best to be disciplined when making decisions you are much happier with the results.

Knowing we have done everything we could about a situation makes it easier to sleep at night than when we feel we should have done more.

Making the choice to be solution focused instead of problem focused is almost always better.

In order to improve at something we must be able to identify the improvements we want to make, create a plan to do so, and take action.

Before you can complete any task whether small or large you must first get started.

To accomplish everything we hope to in life we can’t wait for the perfect time to take action. We have to start right where we are now.

We are able to make the biggest difference where we are, not where we’ve been or where we are going.

Life is meant to be lived, not observed from afar.

Day dreaming is getting a glimpse of our future possibilities. They will only come true if we are willing to take action though.

The best way to have the future that we want is to create it.

There is a time to think and a time to act. We have the challenge of trying to figure out which time it is in the moment.

I think it is better to do what we believe is the right thing to do and be wrong than to do nothing for fear of making a mistake.

The things we are the most passionate about tend to take hold of our thoughts and influence the decisions we make and actions we take.

Some of our greatest ideas come when we least expect them and we don’t always act on them.

Many of our ideas have the potential to help us create the lives we want. We just have to act on them.

To become the person we dream of being we have to be willing to take risks and act on what we think are great ideas when they come to us.

Knowledge and experience are both valuable. However they will only take us so far without discipline and commitment.

There is a big difference between knowing what we need to do and having the courage and discipline to do it.

In order to perform at our best we must bring our best to every situation.

If doing something is the right thing to do then it is always the right thing to do, regardless of who sees it getting done.

The easiest path is rarely the best one to take.

Things that come too easy are not always fully appreciated or appropriately valued.

Taking shortcuts when performing a task rarely produces the results we are hoping for. Especially when quality is important.

Take advantage of the slow and quiet times to prepare for when things are happening at a much faster and busier pace.

When you show up is important, but not as important as how you show up.

It doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you finish.

We tell people who we are and what we care about the most by the decisions we make, actions we take, and the behaviors we display.

Prepare How You Plan To Perform

I believe how we prepare for something will determine how we will perform at it.

A few years ago I decided I wanted to run a Half Marathon.  Since I had only been running 3 to 5 miles at a time the previous couple of months I knew I needed to train for it.  To give me the time I thought I needed I chose a race that was about 3 and a half months out.  I figured this would give me plenty of time to prepare.

Preparation

As I trained for the race I tried a lot of different things to help me prepare.  I mainly focused on the foods I ate, stretching, and my workout routines.

Food

While training for the Half Marathon I was also making an effort to lose a decent amount of weight.  This caused me to focus on the foods and drinks I was putting in my body.  I was trying to cut back on my calories so I would drop weight but had to make sure I was taking in enough to have the energy to workout at the level I needed to each day.  It took a lot of effort along with some trial and error but I was eventually able to figure out what worked best for me and had a consistent diet well before I had to run the Half Marathon.

Stretching

Over the years I have done a lot of different types of workouts.  Throughout most of them I have had to include a certain amount of stretching during the warmup, cool down, or both.  In the past when I ran I would usually just do a few stretches to loosen up my legs before running and walked for my cool down.  As I started to run more often and add more miles than I was used to I started to feel more aches and pains.  To help overcome this I started to stretch during my cool downs and also tried some additional type of stretches.  By the time I was ready for the Half Marathon I felt I had a solid set of stretches that took me around 5 minutes.  I did them before and after each run.

Workout Routine

With my busy schedule the best time I had to run was usually late at night so I did a lot of my training on a treadmill. Running on a treadmill has never been very easy for me or something I have enjoyed.  I prefer to be out in the open, enjoying the scenery, and being able to lose myself in my thoughts as I run.  Not the type of things you can do when on a treadmill.  One of the challenges I have is that my attention span is not the greatest.  That being the case when I run on a treadmill I tend to get board and lose interest.  I could increase the speeds to where I am pushing myself but that would make it extremely hard to maintain for the distance I needed to run.

To overcome my attention span and to push myself at a pace that was manageable I chose to start at a good warmup pace and to increase my speeds at intervals of a quarter or half mile depending on the distance I was going and the speed I was running.  This enabled me to establish a routine that helped me run effectively on the treadmill for a longer period increasing both the distance I ran and the time I did it in.  Once I got this routine down I was able to start out at a decent pace and continue to run faster all the way up until I was done.  Almost always running my fastest towards the end of my runs.

Pre Race

When it finally came time to run the Half Marathon I was very excited.  A week before I felt completely ready and couldn’t wait.  Throughout the week I got more and more anxious and the night before I could hardly sleep.  I got to bed late and I tossed and turned throughout the night.  I must have woke up at least 4 or 5 times to go to the bathroom or check the time to make sure I didn’t over sleep.  I ended up only getting around 5 hours sleep that night.  When my alarm went off and I finally got up in the morning I had so many different thoughts running through my mind and I was very nervous for what the day would bring.

The first thing I did that morning was eat breakfast.  I had brought food and drinks with me so that I could have the same things I had become used to over the previous few months.  After eating I got dressed and started stretching.  It was a little cold that morning and I wanted to try to stay warm for a little longer so I chose to stretch before leaving for the room.  About half way into my stretching I started to feel more calm and less anxious.  By the time I finished and was ready to leave for the race I felt much better.  I was still a little nervous but it was not overwhelming.  I believe by going through the same routine I had for months now added a little bit of normalcy to my day and really helped to settle my nerves.

Race

When I walked over to line up to start the race I saw several different flags marking the race times.  My goal was to run the race in between 2 hours and 2 hours and 10 minutes so I chose to line up next to the flag marked 2 hours.  Initially there were not a lot of people around the flags.  As the start time got closer more racers lined up and eventually everyone was crammed in with little to no room to move.

There were so many people that we were not able to run the 100 or so yards between our flag and the official starting line.  We had to walk and slowly increase our pace as the crowd separated.  By the time we got to the official starting line we were able to jog but there was still not much open room.  For the first couple of miles most people stayed fairly bunched together.  With each mile there was more room to manuever and we all started to separate more.  This allowed us to run at our own pace and you started seeing racers regularly pass each other.

Every other mile of the race there was a timer posted to let us know our time.  When I got to the 3 mile mark I looked over and noticed it had taken me around 31 minutes.  I had run it at just over a 10 minute mile pace.  This was a pretty slow for me.  I knew it was partially due to the crowds at the beginning of the race.  However, I also knew I needed to pick up my pace if I wanted to finish in my goal time.

I slowly increased my pace over the next few miles and I was able to get to the half way mark at around the 58 minute mark.  This made me happy because I was now running at a pace closer to what I had trained at and had a chance of finishing near the 2 hour mark if I could keep my pace up.

For the next few miles I felt like I was able to maintain my pace and at times even increase it.  Around the 10 mile mark I started to feel like I was slowing down.  However, I kept pushing myself to do my best.  I knew there were only 3 miles left and I was determined to finish strong.

Throughout the run we would randomly see people on the side of the road cheering us on.  Some of them would have signs, a few would give us high 5’s, and many would call out words of encouragement.  This helped to motivate us to keep going and at times pushed us to run even faster.

As we got closer to the end of the race the amount of people cheering us on increased and for the last few hundred yards it was like a wall of spectators.  This really made for a great finish.  As I saw the people and heard them cheering I wanted to really push myself and started running harder.

I was not sure what my time was at that point but was determined to give everything I had left in me until I crossed the finish line.  When I rounded the last corner I was running as fast as I felt I could at the time and was very excited to know I was seconds away from finishing my first half marathon.

Positioned next to the finish line was the final clock that showed the current race time.  I looked over at it as I approached and noticed it read just over 1 hour and 56 minutes.  Considering the time I knew I had maintained my speed for the second half and possibly even increased it.

As I crossed the finish line I was overwelmed with a feeling of accomplishment.  I had met all the goals I had set for myself.  I completed my first half marathon, ran the whole way, and had even exceeded my time goal by finishing it in under 2 hours.

Learnings

After finishing my first half marathon I felt like I learned a tremendous amount.  The most important thing is that it solidified for me the fact that how you prepare is how you will perform.

Since then I have run many more races over the years at varying distances (5K’s, 10K’s, half ,marathons, and even a marathon).  The amount of time, effort, and how I have prepared for each event is never quite the same. That being the case neither have been my results.  Regardless of the differences in distances the results have consistently been a direct reflection of how I prepared prior to and leading up to the race.

“In order to get the results we hope to we should always prepare how we plan to perform.”

Day

Day

How we start the day has a big impact on what the rest of our day will be like.

Begin every day with a positive outlook on what the day will bring and a clear purpose of what you hope to accomplish before it is over.

Waking up with a purpose motivates us to get up and face what life has in store for us that day.

It is time to rise and shine.

The world is waiting. It is time to wake up and do the things today that we are each meant to do.

Today is a new day! No matter what happened yesterday, last week, or last year today is what we make it and has the potential to be great.

The dawning of a new day has the potential to wash away the worries of yesterday and replace them with the hope of a better today.

Every day has the potential to be a great one.

Each day is another chance to do what we are meant to and be the person we were born to be.

Every day is a new opportunity to work towards becoming the person we dream of one day being. Make every day count.

Each day is an opportunity to take a step closer to being the person we are meant to be.

Every day is filled with new opportunities and experiences to learn from. We just need to recognize and be open to them.

How our day begins doesn’t always determine what the whole day will be like or how it will end.

We all have good days and bad days. I think the reason we have the bad ones is so that we are better able to appreciate the good ones.

We can influence how good our day is by the thoughts we have, the activities we participate in, and the people we share our time with.

If you are having a tough day and want to feel better do something nice for someone else. Helping others will lift your spirits.

A little bit of laughter can go a long way towards improving your day.

No matter how challenging a day seems it is just 24 hours before a new day begins.

As one day is ending a new one is beginning and with it comes an unlimited amount of possibilities.

Any day spent doing what we believe we are meant to is a great one.

Character and Attitude

Character and Attitude

We tell people who we are and what we care about the most by the decisions we make, actions we take, and the behaviors we display.

Having patience and being flexible is essential because things don’t always go the way we want them to.

Competition has a way of bringing out the best in some people and the worst in others.

Our character is tested the most and is very visible when we are faced with extremely difficult situations.

Regardless of the challenges we are faced with we must do our best to stay true to who we are.

The challenges we are faced with do not determine the person we will become. How we choose to handle them does though.

The bigger the challenge the more important it is to react in a way that aligns with our character and values.

There lies in each and every one of us a core set of personal values that we believe in and choose to live by.

Every so often we need to be reminded to stay true to who we are, especially when we are faced with a significant amount of adversity.

Everyone has challenges to deal with. How we choose to deal with our challenges tells a lot about who we are.

You should never count out someone that is willing to give their all and refuses to quit.

Nothing is more reliable than a person with strong personal values and a committed heart.

Our ego and pride can hold us back from being the person we are capable of if we are not careful.

Some people thrive on drama and negativity. Just because that is who they are does not mean we have to accept it and shouldn’t participate.

A little bit of well intended humor has the ability to relieve stress.

Why blend in when you can stand out. It is ok to be different. Be yourself and shine!

At our core we are all unique and deserve to be seen, accepted, and respected for who we are.

Respect given because of having a lot of money, success, and fame does not last and eventually fades.

The only way to have lasting respect is by having great character and treating others with respect.

Do your best to always show appreciation and express your thanks to others.

I think it is important to say thank you whenever someone does something for you. Even the smallest of tasks.

The examples we set should light the path for others to see and hopefully follow.

Change

Change

Even with the most well thought out plans the unexpected can happen. That is why it is so important to always be flexible and willing to change if needed.

It’s never too late to change, follow our dreams, and become the person we want to be.

To be the person we dream of becoming sometimes we have to first be willing to stop being the person we used to be.

From time to time we have to make the choice to go in a different direction than we’re used to in order to explore new territory.

Most people will adjust to the environment around them if given the opportunity.

Life is a long journey and along the way we learn, grow, and at times have to change in order to become the person we are meant to be.

Sometimes the smallest change can make a very big difference.

Habits are created by small actions taken repeatedly over a period of time.

All significant changes require making a shift on the inside. Especially if we hope for it to be lasting.

Significant change will cause both nervousness and excitement. We can choose to allow it to overwhelm us or motivate us. It’s our choice.

Challenge

Challenge

Most things in life are out of our control. We have to take care of what’s within our control and do our best with the rest.

To achieve the best results we are capable of we must be fully committed to doing our best regardless of the challenges in front of us.

To get to a place of happiness we sometimes first have to travel down some rough roads and through some very tough places.

Experience is the best teacher. The things we are going through today are meant to prepare us for what we will face in the future.

What we experience today is meant to prepare us for the challenges that are still ahead of us.

The failures I endure today will help me to prepare and be successful tomorrow.

Viewing challenging situations as gifts increases our chances of getting all of the value we can from the experience of going through them.

Sometimes we need to do something difficult just to challenge ourselves and see if we are capable.

Choosing whether to focus on the difficulty of a challenging task or the opportunity it presents will impact how we feel about it.

Almost every barrier we have that holds us back in life are of our own creation and can be overcome.

Very challenging tasks become exciting when you have done your best to prepare and feel your ready to face them.

No matter how big the mountain is that we hope to climb we will eventually reach the top as long as we never stop.

There is a certain level of fear mixed with excitement when faced with having to do something challenging we’ve never done before.

There are times in our lives we are faced with difficult situations that scare us. The sooner we face them the sooner we overcome them.

Many of our most difficult problems become manageable once we decide to face them.

Embracing the challenge in front of us makes it easier to face and overcome.

There are times we need the help and support of others to face the challenges in front of us and there are times we must face them alone.

Regardless of the challenges we are faced with we must do our best to stay true to who we are.

The challenges we are faced with do not determine the person we will become. How we choose to handle them does though.

The bigger the challenge the more important it is to react in a way that aligns with our character and values.

Every so often we need to be reminded to stay true to who we are, especially when we are faced with a significant amount of adversity.

Everyone has challenges to deal with. How we choose to deal with our challenges tells a lot about who we are.

When things just don’t seem to be going our way we should do our best to remember that things happen for a reason and keep moving forward.

An initial disappointment can very easily turn into a blessing in disguise.

Balance

Balance

To gain and maintain good balance between our personal and professional lives we have to consider where we spend our time on a daily basis.

Life seems so much greater when we can effectively balance our time between our family, work, church, and hobbies.

Life is not only work, chores, and responsibilities. This weekend do something fun, try to relax, and spend time with friends and family.

Sometimes in order to gain a little balance we have to take a time out and get a break from our normal daily routine.

If we try to carry too many things at once we run the risk of dropping everything.

We can only carry a heavy burden for so long before we become physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. We all need a break at times.

Checking out from the day to day stresses of everyday life for a little while is good so you can decompress and recharge.

Just make sure that you don’t check out for so long that things are even more overwhelming when you get back.

To be at our best our body and mind need an adequate amount of rest.

To physically perform at our best we have to eat right, exercise regularly, and get adequate rest.

Sometimes the best medicine is just sleep.

One of the best ways to finish a long and tiring day is with a good workout.
